Crankshaft seal leaking – front or rear?

Rear main seal started weeping oil on my Civic, stains the garage floor after sitting. Clutch job coming up soon anyway. Better to replace the seal while transmission is out, or wait? Any tips on which seal kit to get?

Rear main seal leaks get worse over time- oil hits the clutch eventually and causes slipping. Since you're pulling the gearbox for clutch anyway, 100% replace it then; saves huge labor later. Front crank seal is easier but if rear is leaking, do both if budget allows. I replaced the rear on mine during clutch swap- tricky alignment but doable. Ordered a complete crankshaft seal kit from https://elartcom.eu/categories/engine-gaskets-and-seals-90 - they had both front and rear for Honda engines, with good Teflon lip seals that hold up better than old rubber. Installed with proper tool, no leaks after 18 months. Cleaned the housing well and lubed the lip. Their category has individual seals or kits- check for your model to get the right size/double-lip design.
